“Beautiful like me” October 25, 2011

This weekend I put on eye make up for the first time in about a year.   I woke and carried a sleepy Celly downstairs to have something to eat and didn’t think anything of it.

Halfway through her meal, however, Celeste apparently became fully awake and looked at me fully for the first time.  She looked at me as we continued our discussion, paused, and did a double take.  “Mama,” she exclaimed.  “You have beautiful eyes like me!”

I’m not surpirsed that she refers to her eyes as beautiful considering that is what everyone she sees says to her.  I’m not surprised that she noticed my eyes were a similar blue to hers after I put on eye make up because they truly stand out more with mascara.  I just hope that she hears all the other compliments beyond those about her beauty that are passed her way every day.

Hopefully, she knows she is more than a set of physically beautiful attributes.  I’ll never stop telling her that she’s beautiful but I think I’ll pay more attention to the other ways I can compliment her.  I always thank her and compliment her helpfulness but I think I’ll start looking for even more ways to do this now.

So, dear readers, do you have any advice?  I want to ensure that my daugher has a well developed sense of self worth linked all her attributes, not just the obvious physical ones that all the strangers exclaim over in public?

Not sure I’m a good one to post since my beautiful child is currently on vacation having been replaced with a hormonal teenager but I would thank her for being helpful and smart and caring and loving and beautiful too.
